{"id":3992,"date":"2023-06-15T18:20:26","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T18:20:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/odourlock.com\/?p=3992"},"modified":"2024-04-10T14:48:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T14:48:31","slug":"urinary-diseases-in-cats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/odourlock.com\/en\/urinary-diseases-in-cats\/","title":{"rendered":"Urinary diseases in cats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Urinary diseases are <strong>frequent, progressive and recurrent in cats, and <\/strong>they are <strong>not always easy to detect <\/strong>as soon as they appear: cats can be very secretive!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blood in the urine<\/strong>, even if initially invisible to the naked eye, is often present in feline urinary tract infections.<\/p>\n<p>It therefore represents a potentially <strong>good early marker<\/strong> of these pathologies, which is why we recommend the use of <span style=\"color: #04b4e0;\"><a style=\"color: #04b4e0;\" href=\"https:\/\/odourlock.com\/en\/products\/maxcare\/?utm_source=Blog&amp;utm_medium=blog_urinary-en-ca&amp;utm_campaign=blog_urinary-en-ca&amp;utm_id=blog_urinary-en-ca&amp;utm_term=blog_urinary-en-ca-maxcare&amp;utm_content=blog_urinary-en-ca-maxcare\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>OdourLock maxCare<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> litter for cats at risk, as it <strong>detects the presence of blood<\/strong> and\/or glucose in the urine as soon as it appears!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the signs of urinary disease?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Urinary diseases in cats are characterized by certain clinical signs that appear as the urinary pathology progresses, including :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>blood in the urine<\/strong> (invisible or, in more advanced cases, visible to the naked eye),<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>difficulty<\/strong> urinating,<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>pain<\/strong> during urination (meowing, abnormal position, etc.),<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\u00a0<strong>intensive <\/strong>licking of the urogenital sphere,<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>frequent<\/strong> urination,<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">urine <strong>outside the litter box<\/strong> (periuria),<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">sometimes, <strong>urethral obstruction<\/strong> (partial or total; in the latter case, the urine no longer passes and this is a life-threatening emergency),<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">change in <strong>behavior<\/strong> (isolation, loss of appetite, aggressiveness, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Which cats are most affected?<\/h3>\n<p>Cats with a history of urinary disease are very often prone to relapse: even when adequate treatment has been put in place, they will still need to be closely monitored.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s also talk about &#8220;risk factors&#8221; = characteristics that could increase the risk of certain cats developing a urinary pathology and that should be closely monitored, namely :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stress\/Anxiety<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overweight<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sedentary\/indoor lifestyle<\/li>\n<li>Multi-cat environment<\/li>\n<li><strong>Male<\/strong> cats<\/li>\n<li>Cats eating <strong>dry food<\/strong>, non-specialized for the urinary tract and who don&#8217;t drink much.<\/li>\n<li>History of urinary diseases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the most common urinary diseases?<\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re talking here in particular about diseases of the lower urinary tract (bladder and urethra).<\/p>\n<p>Ranked by frequency, we find :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Idiopathic cystitis<\/strong>, sometimes called &#8220;Pandora&#8217;s syndrome&#8221;: inflammation of the urinary tract without the presence of an infectious agent;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Urolithiasis<\/strong>: the formation of stones in the urinary tract;<\/li>\n<li>Urinary tract <strong>infections<\/strong>, usually bacterial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How is urinary tract disease treated?<\/h3>\n<p>Treatment begins with a veterinary diagnosis to identify the type of urinary disease causing the symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the pathology diagnosed, different treatments and recommendations may apply. The following advice is often found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase the cat&#8217;s <strong>water<\/strong> intake: water fountain, wet food, multiple water bowls, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Switch to a specific urinary tract diet.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a<strong> &#8220;stress-free&#8221; environment<\/strong> for the cat: access to high, secluded areas, creation of play areas, secure access to food and, last but not least, the location, quality and maintenance of the litter box.<\/li>\n<li>Help cats <strong>lose excess weight<\/strong>: switch to a lower-calorie diet, add cooked vegetables to the ration to improve the feeling of satiety (e.g. zucchini), encourage activity, etc.<\/li>\n<li>When clinical signs are severe, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory and\/or muscle-relaxing treatments may be prescribed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the case of <strong>bacterial <\/strong>origin, antibiotics may be prescribed, depending on the case (note, however, that bacterial origin is an uncommon cause of urinary problems in cats).<\/p>\n<p>In the case of very advanced pathologies or complications, <strong>surgery <\/strong>and\/or <strong>hospitalization <\/strong>are also options, particularly in the case of urinary blockage.<\/p>\n<p><em>This article was written in collaboration with \u00c9lodie Khenifar, Veterinary Doctor, M.Sc.
